Ohio has a ton of talented seniors. Toledo, Northern Illinois and Kent State should all be solid as well. The MAC as a whole was ranked as the No. 13 overall conference on Kenpom last year.

The Zips MSOC host SIU Edwardsville in a MAC showdown at Cub Cadet field on Friday October 13. Don’t expect any superstitious play on Friday the 13th because the Zips have won 6 of their last 7 matches. They are coming off of an impressive victory against Cleveland State in which Skye Harter snagged a goal on the mistake of a defender in the very first minute of the game. Barth-Luther Mouafo also netted one past the Vikings in the 83’ from a corner kick. The team is looking to improve their 0-1 record in the MAC with a victory. On the outlook, three of the next six matches are MAC opponents, so a victory against Edwardsville is what the team needs to continue through conference play with confidence.

Edwardsville is also in good form, however, having won their last three games. This will be their first Conference game this season, so they are surely eyeing the W.

Tor Saunders Made his first Collegiate start at Goal Keeper on Tuesday night against CSU. This game could be another opportunity for him to get some work in against a hungry team. Kick-off is at 7:00PMat First Energy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field Alex Shobe. The Kent State Golden Flashes defeated the Akron Zips to win the MAC Men’s Basketball Championship, 70-65.

Kent State led for most of the game, but Akron came within striking distance on multiple occasions. The Flashes got out to a quick 9-3 lead thanks to a quick 5 points from Jaylin Walker (#23), and another 4 from Jimmy Hall (#35). Kent state got into early foul trouble, with 5 fouls overall just 9 minutes into the game. De La Rosa (#1) accounted for 2 of those fouls. Akron played from behind for most of the first half, and it wasn’t until 3:30 remaining that the Zips took the lead.

Josh Williams hit a clutch 3 bringing the fans back into the game with a score of 23-21. Kent state quickly answered with back to back field goals to retake the lead. Both teams traded shots in the last minute of the first half, heading into the locker rooms with a score of 27-24 Kent state. Both teams shot under 45% from the field during the 1st half. Kent State lead Akron in points in the paint and 2nd chance opportunities.

Akron’s bench made an impact, scoring 8 of the Zips 24 points. Neither team had much luck from the 3 point line, with both teams combining for 2 3-pointers in 13 attempts. MAC Player of the Year Isaiah Johnson led the Zips in the 1st half with 10 points, while Jaylin Walker and Jimmy Hall lead the Golden Flashes with 11 and 10 points respectively. Kent State came out hot in the 2nd half, taking a 36-28 lead.

Less than 2 minutes later, Akron narrowed the lead to 34-36. Jaylin Walker responded with only the 3rd 3 pointer of the game, with Kent State leading 39-34. Akron finally tied up the game again with 11:15 remaining in the second half.

For the next few minutes, the lead changed 3 times, with neither team ever more than 2 points ahead of the other. With 4:24 remaining, Kent State had an 8 point lead thanks to an 10-0 run. The Flashes held unto their lead despite the Zips best efforts, who could only get within 3.

Kent State won a hard-fought victory, 70-65. Isaiah Johnson and Jimond Ivey both finished with 24 points for the Zips. A huge part of Kent State’s upset victory can be attributed to their 63.9% field goal completion percentage in the second half. Jaylin Walker finished with 30 points, 6 rebounds, and was voted MAC Tournament MVP. Jimmy Hall finished with 18 points and led both teams with 10 rebounds. They will move onto the NCAA Tournament, and the bracket will be released tomorrow. Akron Head Coach Keith Dambrot gave Kent State credit for making so many big plays in the last 8 minutes, and congratulated Kent State Head Coach Rob Senderoff for turning their team into championship quality.

Rob Senderoff accredited the win to their shooting percentage and also their low number of turnovers, only committing 6. Here’s what Coach Dambrot had to say. Cleveland, OH- The University of Toledo’s Women’s basketball team won in a tough matchup against Northern Illinois to be crowned the Mac tournament champions.

The Rockets were lead by sophomore guard’s Mikaela Boyd and Olivia Cunningham. Boyd was named Mac Women’s MVP, finishing with a double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Cunningham followed her up with 20 points of her own. Both teams got out to a shaky start, ending the first quarter shooting under 33% with a score of 12( Toledo)-13( Northern Illinois). During the 2nd quarter with 8:36 remaining, Boyd took an elbow shot to the face, and was pretty shook up. Boyd then bounced back scoring the next four points for Toledo.

It wasn’t until 3 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, where Toledo began to look like they were gonna pull away. Olivia Cunningham hit back to back 3 pointers making the score 30( UT)-23( NI). Northern Illinois rallied back before the end of the half making the score 30-30. Three of Toledo’s starters ( Harriott- 4, Santucci- 3, Monakana- 3), got into foul trouble with seven minutes in the 3rd, putting Northern Illinois in the bonus.

After NI jumped to a 43-38 lead with 4 mins left. Toledo cut the lead ending the quarter 49( NI)- 48( UT). Both team’s traded shot-for-shot, with the score at 54-54 with 7:48 remaining on the clock. Toledo then went on a 12-2 run for the next 4 mins, sparked by freshman guard Mariella Santucci. Santucci forced two turnovers, and scored 6 straight points off of and-one plays. Toledo leading 72-62 with 1:48 remaining, a steal by Mikaela Boyd sealed the game. This win qualifies Toledo for a spot into the NCAA Women’s tournament, their opponent remains unknown at this time.

Below is a clip from the post-game press conference featuring; Head Coach Tricia Cullop, Janice Monakana, Olivia Cunningham, and Mikaela Boyd. The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Denver Nuggets with a score of 125-109.

They are now 5-1 out of the last 6 games, and things are falling into place for them. LeBron finished the game with 27 points, and 12 dimes. Kyrie continued his scoring excellence with his 4 th straight game of having more than 26 points, with 27 and 5 assists. Kevin Love had his 16 points and 9 assists, and the Cavaliers bench played a significant role. LeBron James notched 2 nd place in Cavaliers franchise history with 5,228 rebounds, passing Brad Dougherty. This was a huge night for LeBron as he continued to get his shooters open, and make plays all over the court.

Another player that made a significant impact was Kyle Korver who had 14 points, and is 4 three-pointers away from 2,000 made. Kyle Korver, and Derrick Williams are two pieces that will be crucial for the success in the Cavs playoff run in many ways. Korver adds the extra attention from the three-point line, and is a marksman that will go down as one of the greatest three-point shooters.

Williams only had 7 points last night, but his defense and presence on the court was felt throughout the arena. The Cavs are first in the East, and look to continue that trend while the team is consistently strengthening by the week. The Boston Celtics are behind the Cavs by two games, but they caught up during the losing ways in the month of January for Cleveland. The Cavs next game will be away against the Minnesota Timberwolves this Tuesday, February 14th at 8:00 PM. For more information on the Cavaliers, make sure that you stay updated with our website, and we will continue to bring all of the Cavs stats and info that you need. Wednesday February 1st, The University of Akron’s football program held it’s annual signing day press conference, lead by head coach. The team signed 13 new national letters of intent to incoming student-athletes.

    Mac

Seven of these athletes are from the Akron area including schools such as Akron East High School, and St. Mary High School. Coach Bowden called this year’s signing a turning point in the recruitment of local talent. Due to the recent success from the program, local athletes are attending the University to continue their athletic careers instead of seeking it elsewhere. Most of these athletes signed early after the bowl game and during the bowl season.

Out of the remaining six signees, four are Florida natives, and the remaining two reside from Virginia and Texas. Coach Bowden Spoke highly of defensive lineman Eric Bentley (St, Vincent-St.

Mary HS), and Deandre Brimage (East HS). He stated that Bentley was “The guy they are most excited about.” From his highlight tape he shows great hands and explosiveness off the line of scrimmage. Bentley, an undersized defensive lineman standing at 6’2’ 244 lbs could be used at linebacker.

Bowden articulated how defensive lineman and linebacker were two positions that were heavily addressed within the signees. When it comes to defensive lineman Deandre Brimage, Coach Bowden praised his abilities. Brimage is one of the driving forces that sparked an interest, for many recruits to bring their talents to Akron. He also felt that Brimage was one of the best defensive lineman in all of Northeast Ohio. His resume backs this theory up, while finishing his senior year with impressive numbers.

These numbers include 51 tackles, nine sacks, 21 tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Coach Bowden also expressed the importance of speed within the recruitment process. This was addressed with the two signees, Dustin Burkhart (Coventry HS), and Malik Woodridge (St, Vincent-St. The coaches fell in love with the speed of last year’s addition of, who lead the team with 10 receiving touchdowns, and finished second in receiving yards. Both Burkhart, and Woodridge were track athletes who ran a 10.8 in the 100 meter sprint. Burkhart gives them a big body while standing six foot tall, and 188 pounds. This feature in a receiver is something that can replace who declared for the 2017 draft.

Burkhart timed under a 4.40 forty-yard dash, multiple times while attending a camp held by the Zips. Woodridge who has similar attributes to Natson with a 5’9’, 168 pound frame, can be featured as a running back or a slot receiver. Bowden glorified his leadership by describing him as, “The leader of St. V’s programhe was a guy that really pulled those players together and when you watched practice, he was always the guy that spoke. You love his personality and he loves being at Akron.” Bowden stated how essential it was to find, and recruit depth for this team so they can provide fresh legs for a whole 60 minutes. In his five years while being with the team, he has had injuries that have set back the success of each season. This past season was a key example of this, while dealing with injuries with the starting quarterbacks, and.Based off of these injuries, this forced the hand of Tyrell Goodman to take over at the quarterback position.

Goodman was a redshirt senior wide receiver, who had no college experience at the quarterback position. The zips bulked up the position with the signing of Nick Johns (Leesburg, VA), and Alex Ramart (Richmond, Texas). With former starter Woodson not due back from shoulder surgery until this summer, both will be in the open competition for the starting quarterback position. Both of these quarterbacks have great potential through the air, and on the ground. Ramart finished his senior year with over 70% completion percentage, and 4,000-plus yards while leading his team to the Semifinals in Texas. Johns’, a redshirt sophomore, was rated a three star recruit by ESPN.com, Scout.com, Rival.com, and 24/7 Sport.
