The Zips MSOC host SIU Edwardsville in a MAC showdown at Cub Cadet field on Friday October 13. Don’t expect any superstitious play on Friday the 13th because the Zips have won 6 of their last 7 matches. On the outlook, three of the next six matches are MAC opponents, so a victory against Edwardsville is what the team needs to continue through conference play with confidence.

Edwardsville is also in good form, however, having won their last three games. This will be their first Conference game this season, so they are surely eyeing the W.

Tor Saunders Made his first Collegiate start at Goal Keeper on Tuesday night against CSU. This game could be another opportunity for him to get some work in against a hungry team. Kent State led for most of the game, but Akron came within striking distance on multiple occasions. The Flashes got out to a quick 9-3 lead thanks to a quick 5 points from Jaylin Walker (#23), and another 4 from Jimmy Hall (#35). Akron’s bench made an impact, scoring 8 of the Zips 24 points. Neither team had much luck from the 3 point line, with both teams combining for 2 3-pointers in 13 attempts. MAC Player of the Year Isaiah Johnson led the Zips in the 1st half with 10 points, while Jaylin Walker and Jimmy Hall lead the Golden Flashes with 11 and 10 points respectively. For the next few minutes, the lead changed 3 times, with neither team ever more than 2 points ahead of the other. With 4:24 remaining, Kent State had an 8 point lead thanks to an 10-0 run. The Flashes held unto their lead despite the Zips best efforts, who could only get within 3.

Kent State won a hard-fought victory, 70-65. Isaiah Johnson and Jimond Ivey both finished with 24 points for the Zips. A huge part of Kent State’s upset victory can be attributed to their 63.9% field goal completion percentage in the second half. Jaylin Walker finished with 30 points, 6 rebounds, and was voted MAC Tournament MVP. Jimmy Hall finished with 18 points and led both teams with 10 rebounds. They will move onto the NCAA Tournament, and the bracket will be released tomorrow. Akron Head Coach Keith Dambrot gave Kent State credit for making so many big plays in the last 8 minutes, and congratulated Kent State Head Coach Rob Senderoff for turning their team into championship quality.

Northern Illinois rallied back before the end of the half making the score 30-30. Three of Toledo’s starters ( Harriott- 4, Santucci- 3, Monakana- 3), got into foul trouble with seven minutes in the 3rd, putting Northern Illinois in the bonus.

After NI jumped to a 43-38 lead with 4 mins left. Toledo cut the lead ending the quarter 49( NI)- 48( UT). Both team’s traded shot-for-shot, with the score at 54-54 with 7:48 remaining on the clock. Toledo then went on a 12-2 run for the next 4 mins, sparked by freshman guard Mariella Santucci. Santucci forced two turnovers, and scored 6 straight points off of and-one plays. Toledo leading 72-62 with 1:48 remaining, a steal by Mikaela Boyd sealed the game. This win qualifies Toledo for a spot into the NCAA Women’s tournament, their opponent remains unknown at this time.

Kyle Korver, and Derrick Williams are two pieces that will be crucial for the success in the Cavs playoff run in many ways. Williams only had 7 points last night, but his defense and presence on the court was felt throughout the arena. The Cavs are first in the East, and look to continue that trend while the team is consistently strengthening by the week. The team signed 13 new national letters of intent to incoming student-athletes.

Seven of these athletes are from the Akron area including schools such as Akron East High School, and St. Mary High School. Coach Bowden called this year’s signing a turning point in the recruitment of local talent. Due to the recent success from the program, local athletes are attending the University to continue their athletic careers instead of seeking it elsewhere. Most of these athletes signed early after the bowl game and during the bowl season.

Out of the remaining six signees, four are Florida natives, and the remaining two reside from Virginia and Texas. Coach Bowden Spoke highly of defensive lineman Eric Bentley (St, Vincent-St.

Mary HS), and Deandre Brimage (East HS). He stated that Bentley was “The guy they are most excited about.” From his highlight tape he shows great hands and explosiveness off the line of scrimmage. Bentley, an undersized defensive lineman standing at 6’2’ 244 lbs could be used at linebacker.

Bowden articulated how defensive lineman and linebacker were two positions that were heavily addressed within the signees. When it comes to defensive lineman Deandre Brimage, Coach Bowden praised his abilities. Brimage is one of the driving forces that sparked an interest, for many recruits to bring their talents to Akron. He also felt that Brimage was one of the best defensive lineman in all of Northeast Ohio. His resume backs this theory up, while finishing his senior year with impressive numbers.
